The Women's Army Corp was formed out of neccesity, despite opinions at the time on the subject of women serving alongside men in the armed forces. A shortage of male troops led to a new policy, which may have helped to shape changing attitudes to sexual equality after the war. The WAC remained in existence until 1978, when women were admitted to serve in units alongside men.
