In 1960s Britain, class distinctions were still observed in a way that would seem strange to many people today. For most of the 20th Century, the working classes had been the heroes of the world - it was they who had fought and died in two World Wars, and it was they who were now responsible for social revolution throughout the western world. For the first time, musicians and songwriters were speaking more loudly to the people than the politicians, parents and teachers, and the concept of working class heroes recognizing themselves as the powerful force that they were finally spilled into the public consciousness with the work of icons like former Beatle, John Lennon.
