In later versions of Star Trek, the badge worn by the officers and crew of a starship was more than just a Starfleet emblem. It was also a communications device which could be used on board the ship or while on away missions to contact any member of the crew. Combadges were also useful in that missing crew members could be found by scanning for their combadge's signal. This design replicates the combadge from the first few series of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
